Section 3 History

Section 3 of the Luxembourg Brotherhood of America is the oldest of the four remaining sections from the Luxemburger Bruderbund established at an organizational meeting held on October 23, 1887 on the south side of Chicago.

The section was formed in April 1897 by John Glessner, a member of Section 1, who was then living in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. On May 9, 1897, Grand Lodge President John Hankes initiated 33 men into the L.B.A. and christened them as Section 3.  They were from the Rogers Park and High Ridge neighborhoods, men devoted to their greenhouse businesses and their parish, St. Henry’s on the southwest corner of Ridge Avenue and Devon Avenue in Chicago.

The following men were the initial 33 charter members:
Fred Arendt, J.P. Koob, Peter Sartor, Anton Beaufils, Theodore Lanners, J.A. Schmit, Joseph Bill, Mathias Laplume, Vincent Schmitz, Nick Brucher, Nick Laplume, John Scholer, Louis Clesen, J. Leichtenberg, Peter Schoos, Peter Diederich, Fred Lutgen ,Leon Schuler, Nick Drickes,  J.P. Michels, Nick Thinnes, Peter Eischen, Nick Nilles, Peter Tres, Hubert Hostert. Peter Nilles, Fritz Wanderschied, J.P. Jaeger, Theo. Porters, Andrew Weber, Cor. Kimmes,  J.B. Salentiny, and Peter Weimeskirch.

The first officers of Section 3 were:
President: J.P. Koob
Vice President: J.P. Michels
Recording Secretary: Nick Nilles
Financial Secretary: Nick Thinnes
Treasurer: Peter Weimeskirch

The section’s size and influence was quickly felt as the L.B.A. grew. By the year 1908, the Section rose to 350 members, the largest in the Brotherhood.

The history of Section 3 is best told with the history of the Schobermesse, the yearly fall festival of the Luxembourg people, modeled after the Schueberfouer in Luxembourg City. In Luxembourg this annual fair is called Schueberfouer in the Letzebuerger language, in contrast to the German pronunciation Schobermesse. The festival continues to this day, being held annually in the month of July in Morton Grove, IL.

This is the Section 3 advertisement from the 1919 Schobermesse Program. One hundred years later we still believe that “Our Section is the Section That Serves Well!” Our meetings are held on the third Sunday of the months of January, April, July, and Octobers, either in the northwest side of Chicago or in the north/ northwestern suburbs. We welcome all who are interested in helping to keep the Luxembourg heritage alive in Chicagoland. Come Join Us!
